Vacation

My vacation starts today at 2 p.m.  Can’t wait!

What are you all doing for the Memorial Day holiday weekend?

How do you keep on track with eating right and exercise during vacations?  That is the question.

Here are some things I plan to do:

  • Get up early in the morning and walk/jog
  • Eat heathy 80% of the time (you have to allow yourself to cheat a little bit)
  • Text my friends/accountability partners who are on the same fitness journey as me
  • Throw in some crunches, lunges, push-ups, etc

Good thing the iPhone has this really cool ap called workout trainer.  It has a ton of different workouts, including timers, video instructions, personal trainer ‘voice’, etc.  It’s a great thing to use when you are away from your gym.

There is a free version, and also a paid version. I bought the paid version for access to more of the workouts.  It’s worth it! 🙂

Plant Protein

I was trying to switch up my protein intake from pretty much all animal protein to some plant-based protein.  I was at the Vitamin Shoppe the other day, intending to buy Sun Warrior, which I heard is pretty good.  Instead, I bought some Pure Green Protein because it was on sale.  Oh my…what a MISTAKE!  This stuff was totally nasty!!!  I bought the chocolate flavor and mixed some in with my Shakeology hoping that would help cut the “plant” taste.  Wrong.  It was so gross.  It totally ruined my Shakeology, and I ended up dumping half the shake down the sink! 😦

Do you guys know of any good tasting plant protein powders?

I’m thinking I will go back and buy Sun Warrior.  Have you tried it?  If so, what do you think?

At least it has pretty good reviews.

Careful with the Hot Eggs

I got up early this morning despite going to bed late. That ALWAYS happens to me.  Ugh.  I guess I just am not meant to sleep in anymore! 😦

I decided to go do some cardio so threw on the gym clothes and headed to the gym for the elliptical machine.  I did about 44 mins and burned about 418 calories.  It felt good but I truly wasn’t feeling it.  You know some mornings you have all this energy and are ready to jump into your workout and other mornings it’s a total drag. This morning, it was a drag!

I headed back home and decided to do two slices of Ezekiel bread and egg whites.  It was SO good, HOWEVER I was so hungry I dug right in.  Well apparently the eggs were too hot (of course I guess, I started chomping ’em pretty much right out of the pan)!  So, I burn the roof of my mouth!  I hate that.  I mean I’m taking the kind of burn where you can feel that lil’ fragile skin dangling down with your tongue.  EWW!!!

Fortunately or unfortunately, it hasn’t stopped me from coming to Starbucks and drinking my hot coffee.  But every time I take a sip that tender lil’ area is not feeling to good.  Ugh.  Oh well.  Thank goodness our bodies heal!

Prayer

Speaking of healing, I am hearing some pretty disheartening news lately from friends regarding “junk” that’s going on in their marriages.  It is so sad to me. I mean these are great people.  You know they got something special and you don’t want to see them throw that away.   I feel like the spiritual warfare surrounding marriages is huge right now. Of course, Satan wants to tear down the first institution God created and wreak havoc on the family.

So, if you are a believer (and I hope you are) would you join me in prayer for marriages and families in general?  Thanks!

It’s so tough…the culture we are up against.  But we gotta keep fighting the good fight.  It’s worth it!

Well…I’m off to church now!  Enjoy your Sunday everyone!  BE BLESSED!

People Watching

Happy Saturday!

I feel like I have so much to cram into this weekend!  There is never enough time to get anything done.

Last night I had a physical therapy appointment right from work.  Oh, there is great progress on the hip and back.  Yay!!  After that I headed to downtown Ann Arbor to meet with a client and our web guy from the pro bono work I’ve been doing.  We didn’t get quite as much accomplished as I would like, but it’s a big job! 🙂 So much to do on that…

This morning, got up early, got some stuff done around home, then came up to the coffee shop quick before boot camp.

It looks like it’s going to be a gorgeous weekend here in the D.  This morning is perfect. There are a lot of people walking around town this morning, and I like that.  It’s so great to see everyone out and about, enjoying the morning.  I am an avid people watcher. 😉 I don’t know why, but watching people is completely fascinating to me.

To my disgust, I watched the lady behind the counter take my money, work the register, etc. with her “food gloves” on, and then proceed to make someone’s sandwich and “flop around the eggs” with those same gloves!  Let’s just say I’m glad that sandwich wasn’t mine. 😉

You know the best places to people watch in my opinion are the mall and the airport.  You see all these people hustling and bustling around.  I always wonder, what’s their story? Where are they going?  What is their life like? What makes them happy? What makes them tick?  How was their childhood? (LOL).  Seriously.

I’ve always enjoyed hearing people’s’ stories, and learning where they’ve come from and what they are about.  My minor is psychology and though I didn’t do anything with it “professionally” perse,  it still totally interests me.

So beware!  You never know…I may be watching you.

Physical Therapy to the Rescue!

Chiropractors and Physical Therapists

I have this bad habit of sleeping on my stomach with my right leg out.  My chiropractor has told me for years – don’t do this!  I also used to have a REALLY BAD habit of sitting on my left leg.  You know… folding it up on your chair, underneath you.  Again, my chiropractor “called it” and knew I did that just by the issues with my hip.

I had stopped the habit, and was sleeping really good.  I was doing really well with all the workin’ out … and lately, I think I just got lazy with my sleeping and sitting.  I’ve caught myself, in the last couple weeks, sleeping on my stomach with my leg out, AND sitting on my left leg.  :O  Seriously, what is wrong with me???

Sure enough, my hip got off.  I didn’t really feel it in my hip as much as I felt it in my knee.  The last few days my right knee was really giving me some serious pain. I had a knee injury a few years back, and now I wonder if it was due to my hip being off… the knee was misaligned, and got injured (it happened riding a bike).

Yesterday I went to the chiropractor, and he said my hip was seriously jacked.  He does funky lil moves to check your range of motion.  My left leg/foot could turn in, my leg couldn’t.   If you are familiar with chiropractors, you probably also know the infamous “strength test.” This is where you hold up your leg or arm, or whatever they are testing, and they push down while you try to hold it up.  He did this to me yesterday.  My left leg did great, held it up, he pushed down, it didn’t drop.  My right leg however, wasn’t so strong.  He pushed it, and BAM… went right down.  The good part is, he knew exactly what/where to adjust.

He fixed me up… did a lil “cracking” here and there… and I was outta there feeling like a million bucks! 🙂

Then… I went to sleep. : (

Gosh darn, I screwed it up in my sleep again.  I was trying so hard to sleep “correctly” and follow all of the rules I was given. No sleeping on the stomach, pillow between the legs…  Apparently I didn’t do something right. Woke up again with knee pain and my knee hurt all day walking around.

Thankfully, I remembered how well physical therapy helped me last time I had this problem.

Last fall I went through the same issues.  My chiropractor referred me to an excellent physical therapist.  This guy is great.  He does manipulation and needle therapy. That’s right… NEEDLE THERAPY!!   Ouch.  Yes, it’s a little painful… but I’m telling you, it works.

What he does is checks the spine, hip, etc.  He makes sure you are in the correct alignment. If not, he will adjust you.  Then comes the needles.  The theory of the needles is that if you jam a needle into the tight muscle spasm, the muscle will relax.  They discovered this back when people were getting cortisone shots.  Basically, they discovered that the muscle spasm would respond to the “shot” even without the cortisone injection.  Just having the needle puncture the muscle knot was enough to cause the muscle to relax.

So… after I got adjusted, he pulled out about 6-7 needles and jammed that in my butt! GASP!  If that is not  a humbling experience I don’t know what is.

I pretty much laid there for 10 minutes and let them just chill out in the muscle. ha.  After a bit, he came in and pulled ’em all out… did some message work, and then sent the tech in to ultrasound the area.  Again… I got up feeling like a million bucks! Okay, maybe two million bucks today! 😉

Seriously – it works!  I am hoping this adjustment holds better due to also relaxing the muscles around it. This is something that the chiropractor doesn’t do (well, unless you also see a massage therapist there).   All I know is last fall when I was having this issue, a few trips to the Physical Therapist and I was all better! 🙂

I have another check up on Friday after work… crossing my fingers.  All I gotta say is Thank God for Chiropractors and Physical Therapists!

Also, if you are experiencing knee pain… seriously consider getting the alignment of your hips checked out!  It’s worth it!

Dinner

I came home and made a delicious low-carb, high protein dinner.

Egg whites, chicken sausage, spinach and green pepper!

love al fresco chicken sausage!  It makes dishes like these super yummy and healthy!  Al fresco sausages are all natural and MSG FREE!  Yay, I can eat it!

Mmmm!

Dessert was chocolate chia protein pudding!

It was so good, I practically licked the bowl!

I’m thinking I’m gonna have to make this pudding my recovery meal from now on!  It’s MUCH MORE satisfying then just a whey protein shake! 😉

Recipe…

Chocolate Chia Protein Pudding

Ingredients:

  • 2 TBS chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 TBS cocoa powder

Directions:

Put the chia seeds in a bowl, and add almond milk.  Let it sit in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes or until the chia seeds turn gel-like. Then, pull it out and add the protein powder and cocoa powder.  Stir it up good and Whola!  There ya have it.   Simple.  Healthy.  And satisfies that chocolate craving! 😉

Where has the time gone?

Hello All.  Happy sunny Monday to everyone!

I have really let the ball drop on my blogging.  I have been SO VERY BUSY!!!  I am going to try to be more consistent again.

I hope all of the mothers out there had a wonderful Mother’s Day.  I enjoyed a wonderful lunch with the family, celebrating my beautiful mom. 🙂

Workouts

My workouts have been going pretty well.  I haven’t gotten up early lately to work out before work. 😦 I need to get to it again, but have been up late doing some work and getting up that extra hour would kill me. LOL.

I have been consistently going to boot camp and BodyBlade.  I am really loving BodyBlade.  It’s definitely not as hard as boot camp, but you can tell it’s working some wonders on the arms! 😉

Eating

So, a friend and I are doing a plan our trainer gave us.  It involves a LOT of eating (good… I like eating!).   I actually started this plan back in August, but after about 6 mos or so was not as strict with it.  So… due to the fact that summer is rolling around soon, my friend and I decided to get more committed to our “eating right” again.

The Plan – You eat every 3 hours – This is intended to keep your metabolism going.  You are eating a TON of protein (your weight, in grams of protein) per day.

Here’s kinda how a typical day works:

  • 5:30 am – protein & complex carb
  • 8:30 am – protein & complex carb
  • 11:30 am – protein & complex carb
  • 2:30 pm – protein & veggie
  • 5:30 pm – protein & veggie
  • 7:30 or 8:30 – protein & veggie

You don’t want to eat anything two hours before bed.  You also get a CHEAT DAY!! 🙂  YAY!!!!

Sometimes it’s hard to stick to the every 3 hours, there’s days when you just simply cannot eat at your “allotted time.” That’s okay… but for the most part, you stick with the plan to keep the fire burnin’.

For me, this involves a lot of egg whites!  I hope my friends will tell me if I start bawking like a chicken! 😉

(Source)

The meals are very simple to plan (seriously think egg whites and whole grain toast or turkey sausage and a sweet potato), and easy to do…

It can get a little boring, but oh well.  It really is a healthy and clean way to eat.

So…

Questions of the Day:

  • If you are a mom, how was your Mother’s Day?
  • Do you follow some type of “eating plan” and if so, what is it?

Day 3 of Shakeology Cleanse

I Made It!

Well, here I am… I made it to the end of day 3 on the Shakeology cleanse.

Thank Goodness!

Overall, I would say the cleanse has gone well. I did have a headache prett much every day, and my head just felt fuzzy at times. Also, there were times that my stomach was growling so loud, my coworkers could hear it.

However, I wasn’t really weak or anything as most cleanses leave you.

Tonight I did end up making 3 egg whites just prior to having my last shake. Yes, I guess it’s cheating a little bit, but I wanted to get my body used to eating more again, in(stead of just starting with my 6 meals (every three hours) again tomorrow.

I definitely feel thinner, less bloated. My system feels “clean.” I’ve had no stomach issues as normally do. I have lost a few pounds, although hard to tell exactly how many because my scale can give me four different readings standing on it 4 times within the same minute.

Tomorrow morning I will weigh myself again, and see if I can kinda guess some final result.

Would I do the Shakeology cleanse again?

Perhaps. Probably. For now though… I am glad it’s over! 🙂

Cheers…

Flax Bar

I came across my new favorite snack!  I was visiting The Better Health Store on Saturday (they have coupons for 15% off on Saturdays).

They had some samples there for an amazing and healthy, snack bar.  It’s called Flax Bar, it’s by Live Smart.

The chocolate one is my favorite! 😉

This bar is full of the good stuff (all ingredients you can pronounce).   It’s made with organic flax & oats.  It is vegan and wheat free.  It has up to 100% of daily omega-3 fatty acids.   AND… very low in calories!

I also LOVE the fact that it’s made in the USA, and only about 20 miles from me! 😉

 Last night’s workout

Last night’s workout was quite the challenge.  It was a “free night” at our gym.  We had a full house.  It was fun, we were doing some photos and such for the website.

First I did the boot camp class, which seemed harder than normal (maybe because I ate a semi-big dinner beforehand), and then BodyBlade.

It was fun to see new people give it all a whirl.   Some of us “regulars” were actually doing a bit of whining because they kicked our butt extra hard (probably for the photos – ha)!  All I can say is, my photo better look good or it ain’t goin’ on no website! 😉

I hope you all are having a fabulous Tuesday!

Grossness!

Happy Friday!

I’ve been meaning to post all week, and I have been soo busy!  But… I wanted to tell warn you guys about a NASTY health drink.

I was talking with a lady at the health food store who thought I may be eating too much animal protein. So, I decide to try some vegetable protein. I was at a different health store talking to the owner, and she gave me some free samples.  I thought, “Great!”

Oh my gosh…. this drink was AWFUL!!!

I was at work, so I didn’t have any almond milk or anything to blend it with…

It was so think and slimy seeming…. and it smelled like grass, and seaweed, and just YUCK!

I simply wanted to vomit.  However… I really wanted some protein prior to my boot camp workout, so I tried to make it work.

I went to the vending machine in search of juice or something I could add to it…. Thank goodness they had this!

Fuze to the RESCUE!!!

I poured that baby right into the sludge…

I gave it another whirl…

It was not great… but it was bareable… barely.   I suppose?!?!

It may be healthy, but it taste so bad it practically killed me! 😦

I’m sorry Garden of Life… I like you, but this Raw Meal is just GROSS!

Try at your own risk!

Sunny Starbucks Afternoon

It’s a beautiful, sunny afternoon. I’m sitting in Starbucks drinking some fresh brewed decaf & eating a scrumptious dark chocolate square while attempting to do some reading on PR & the social web.

20120424-121748.jpg

What could be better?

Oh… I know! It’d be much better if I didn’t have to go back to work in 30 minutes! 😦

Better get to reading… Sitting in front if this big window is distracting me! 😉

Question of the Afternoon:

Do you have a favorite lunch time “escape from the office”?

Kale Chips

The guy at Panera just gave me a free coffee!  How nice of him!  🙂

I don’t know why I torture myself by coming to Panera.  The aroma of fresh baked bread and cookies is killing me right now!

How was your weekend?

Trail Walk

Last night I enjoyed a nice trail walk with my dad.  I love living in a spot where I can walk right from home to a walking trail.  My dad came by, and we hoofed it. We “speed walked” for about 55 minutes at about 4.5 mph!  It was a lil’ windy and cool, but highly enjoyable.

My dad is a great walking partner.  I really love our deep conversations about the bible.  Last night we were talking a lot about the connections between the Old and the New Testament.  Amazing, just amazing.  And it just blows my mind how detailed God is – in everything!

For example, we talked about how Jesus was born and wrapped in swaddling clothes.  Well, swaddling clothes of course is what they would bury the dead in.  It’s what Jesus was wrapped in when buried in the tomb. SO, what a connection  showing all again, He was “born to die.”  He was wrapped in swaddling clothes (clothes for the dead) as a little newborn baby.

God is just so amazing how He connects all the details. Wow…

Along our journey, we marveled at God’s creation.  We kept running into bunnies.  They were so cute.  This lil’ guy was like the sixth one we saw!

Kale Chips

After our walk, I went home and jumped into my “comfys” and settled in the kitchen to make some kale chips.  My friend had given me some earlier in the day, and gosh they were delicious!  I cannot believe how simple to make either.  Perhaps you all have tried them and I am way behind the “kale craze,” however if you haven’t, give them a try!

Ingredients:

  • Fresh organic kale
  • Olive Oil (in spritzer)
  • Seasoning salt
  • Sea salt

Directions:

Rinse the kale and dry off.  Break apart from the stem.  Lay out the “leaves” on a cookie sheet.  Spray/spritz with some olive oil.  Sprinkle with sea salt and seasoning salt.

Ta Da!  Nice crispy kale chips! 🙂

So delicious!

I put them in a bowl with my 94% fat free microwave popcorn and had a yummy evening snack!

Totally satisfied my salt cravings! 🙂

Off to do some reading before boot camp.  Picked up a new book from the Library – Inbound Marketing (New Rules of Social Media Series).  Anyone read it?  I’ll let ya know how it is…
